Dear Graduates,
One definition stands out as I reflect on these past four years and look to the future. authentic | adjective | au·then·tic | true to one's own personality, spirit or character.
As Shakespeare famously wrote, “All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely Players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts.”
Inscribed inside the Temple at Delphi is “Gnothi Seauton,” which means, Know Thyself.
The Sufi poet Rumi said, “Yesterday, I was clever and wanted to change the world. Today, I am wise and decided to change myself.”
To be at our best, we must focus on the present moment. The great scientist Albert Einstein tells us that space and time are really just one thing — spacetime — and that the past, present and future don’t really exist.
Only the present truly exists. However, most of the time we are focused on our regrets of the past and our fears of the future and thus, do not focus on the wonder of the present.
This moment of commencement and celebration culminates in your years of hard work.
As healers and problem-solvers, we know the answer to a problem is rarely cut and dry. More often than not, we must start by eliminating possibilities and adjusting our perceptions, then reassessing our patients, lab samples or research hypotheses before finding the answer.
The search for the answer is the true process of medicine. It’s the lessons you’ve learned in the classroom. It’s the techniques you’ve applied in the clinic. It’s the relationships you’ve developed with mentors and peers. Know that you are more powerful when you work together than when you problem-solve alone.
You understand health and well-being. More than that you’ve learned valuable life lessons that will serve you well in times of great uncertainty and change. In these moments, take time to be present and to breathe.
On this day of commencement, take a moment to focus on and celebrate your authentic self.
