Dear Graduates of the College of Applied Human Sciences,

On behalf of the College's faculty and staff, I extend our congratulatory wishes on this benchmark day.

It is an honor and a privilege for me to share even a brief moment of this special day with you. Some may say otherwise, but earning a degree is a big deal and one that should be celebrated.

The ancient Roman philosopher Seneca said, “If you have passed through life without opposition, no one can ever know what you are capable of, not even you.” I am certain that your path to today was filled with plenty of opposition – some obvious and universal, like navigating life in a post-pandemic world, and others more personal and private. Although it didn’t seem like it, those challenges were gifts to you because they provided you the opportunity to show what you were capable of. Your ability to persevere and embrace the rocky path to a degree and the new life that comes with it are true signs of your resiliency.

Resilience lies at the core of the Mountaineer spirit, and it is a quality that will serve you well regardless of your degree or chosen profession. The work you have completed as a Mountaineer has equipped you with all that you need to go forth.

Today, you can savor the climb and look forward to a new chapter. I encourage you to expand your network of mentors with the momentum fueled by your courageous spirit and curious mind. Don’t be afraid to bring others along who are walking the path you have just conquered. Celebrating, sharing and helping others is a core of our shared experiences as learners and human beings.
