Dear College of Creative Arts and Media Graduates,
Congratulations! Graduation is a significant achievement, and you should take this moment to be proud and celebrate. This is also time to reflect on where we have been and where we are going.
Yes, that change in pronouns was intentional. Because the answer to where YOU are going is contextual; you are not living in a vacuum. This is especially true for graduates of the College of Creative Arts and Media. Graduating from this college means your profession relates to shaping and informing culture, which means professionally you must be aware of the larger WE. A quick look at the CCAM mission statement makes this clear, “At the WVU College of Creative Arts and Media, our mission is to advance freedom of expression and creativity to enrich the human experience and contribute to the betterment of society.”
What is different than for past graduating classes? The role of artificial intelligence. When I say different than for other graduating classes, I am thinking of specific “advancements” that have happened in just the last year. AI-generated characters such as Tilley Norwood and Breaking Rust have provided a glimpse into a possible future for our industries. The recent Tom Cruise/Brad Pitt fight scene was a stunning example of what future “deep fakes” could look like. Those 3 examples are drastically different than what was thought possible 1 year ago.
This rate of change will require you to ask questions about how you adapt to, and adopt, this technology. This includes making ethical decisions on how, when, where, and why you use this technology. As professionals you must stay on top of these tools and adopt acceptable practices. Ethically, the knowledge that humanity needs to continue developing what some call “natural intelligence” (judgement, critical thinking, empathy, and human creativity) can never be forgotten. Fortunately, you have been equipped with the tools to make thoughtful, responsible choices. That is what future leaders do.
As you answer these questions, and the questions we have to imagine, your purpose and conviction will guide you.
