Dear College of Creative Arts and Media Graduates,
Congratulations! As we close the first quarter of the 21st century, you are ready to enter a career that is the dawn of a new era! From what we have already witnessed, it will be an era with great potential, hopefully for good. In the last 12 months we have seen the birth of Tilly Norwood and the censorship of student media.
So, what kind of professions are you entering? Strangely, you are entering a world of uncertainty that is not unlike what your predecessors have faced for over a century. As a graduate of the College of Creative Arts and Media, you all enter professions that require the ability to adapt and a commitment to being true to yourself and the truth. That has been the case since the dawn of the Second Industrial Revolution.
The ability to adapt has always been needed by anyone working in our professions, and the ability to adapt remains central to long-term success. Adaptability can take many forms, but the willingness to accept change, willingly recalibrate your personal direction, and seek opportunities will be critical. Adapting is something you will need to do regularly throughout your career.
The other constant is an often overlooked “piece of the puzzle.” Having the strength to be true to yourself and your sense of purpose is not always easy.
At times you may need to change your situation by either a) seeking another opportunity or b) being ready to lead the efforts to make real change. If you seek to lead the efforts to make real change, be ready to buckle up. Change is hard. But to quote Kara Lawson, “Don’t wait for life to get easier, learn how to handle hard better.”
But for now, reflect, enjoy your achievement, share hugs (if you are OK with that), and prepare for the dawn of the new era.
