Today, your values are on full display. During your time at West Virginia University, you’ve had ups and downs, but you stayed the course despite the difficulties. Behind such perseverance and persistence is usually a guiding force: values such as helping others, learning new things and growing as an individual.
Underlying your impressive work is another value, one you share with the Davis College, to create a world sustainably fed, clothed and sheltered. Though admirable, leading a life based on values is not always easy, as I’m sure you’ve experienced.
A beautiful symbol of your time at the Davis College and the journey ahead of you is the very state we serve. There will be mountains and valleys that await you just as there are mountains and valleys behind you now. You may be daunted as you step into your new life: no longer a student but an educated professional. Think back to your first day here. I’m sure it was daunting to you then, too. That’s the beauty of the journey. As you look back on the mountains and valleys you’ve successfully traversed, you can take comfort as you embark on the next phase of your journey.
Remember, the valleys you’ve endured are as important and valuable as the mountaintops you’ve ascended — graduation, for example.
