My Fellow Graduate,
Congratulations! You have successfully completed your time at West Virginia University and have become a part of one of the greatest alumni groups in the world. I hope that your time at WVU has been the best of your life, just as it has been the best of mine. As I reflect on my last five years in Morgantown, I realize that we have been here for a very exciting time in the University’s history.
We’ve seen the naming of 6 Goldwater scholars and 5 Truman scholars, football BCS bowl wins in Tempe, AZ, and Miami, a basketball Big East championship and final four appearance in Indy, record donations, the construction and renovation of many campus buildings, a conference realignment, and much, much more.
We will always have a place in our hearts for WVU. There truly is nothing like Mountaineer Nation, and there is no other class of graduates like us. As we continue our education or enter the real world, let us not forget about this place or each other; I know I never will, maybe it’s because my five years here have been the best of my life, or maybe it’s just because this place is unforgettable and irreplaceable. They say, “Once a Mountaineer, always a Mountaineer,” and never is this more important to remember than now. You all have already made WVU proud, and I know your greatest successes are still far from being realized.
As you go on with the next chapter of your life, I challenge you to live life day by day, and don’t sweat the small things; continue spreading Mountaineer pride wherever you go; embrace the gifts we’ve all been given to be simple and to be free, and may you never forget the country roads that brought this far. I wish you all the best of luck in the future.
Let’s Go Mountaineers!
