Caps & Gowns
Frequently asked questions about academic regalia
Must I wear regalia at the graduation ceremony?
Yes. Academic regalia is required for participation in all WVU commencement and convocation ceremonies.
Where can I purchase regalia?
Official WVU regalia is available only at the Downtown and Evansdale WVU Bookstore locations. You can order regalia online at Herff Jones or contact the bookstore directly for purchasing information.
Please note that WVU graduates wear a customized blue gown with a gold university seal. Honors College graduates don a customized gold gown.
Will regalia be available for purchase at graduation?
Regalia will NOT be available for purchase at the ceremony. All caps, gowns, tassels, and hoods must be purchased beforehand.
Where can I find honor cords, stoles, medallions, etc.?
Latin honors (cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude) will be recognized by WVU with the presentation of honor cords, a double braid of gold and blue. These will be distributed through the schools and colleges prior to commencement exercises.
Any adornments given by academic organizations will be distributed by those organizations. Unapproved adornments and those not University-related are not permitted.
What color tassel or hood do I wear with my gown?
Please refer to this guide for the correct color selection of tassels and hoods. If your specific major is not listed, staff at the WVU Bookstore can assist you. You may also contact your school or college for guidance.
What if I’m receiving more than one degree?
If you are a double major, you should wear the color (and gown) of the highest degree you are receiving. If your degrees are of equal ranking, wear the color of the group with whom you are seated. You may not wear more than one tassel.
What attire should I wear beneath my gown?
Dark trousers, slacks, skirts, and dresses are appropriate, as are dress shirts and ties. Comfortable shoes are highly recommended!
Temperatures in the venues can fluxuate. Although sweaters and jackets are not suggested underneath gowns because of their bulk, dressing in thin layers is may be helpful.
